I found 2 punctures in the tube, one of which was close to the valve and being a poor organiser, I couldn't find a complete patch kit.
NO matter, I fixed it up this afternoon with a new tube and hoping its going to stay inflated tomorrow morning. It was horrid humid and I was also getting attacked by a mosquitoe.
Instant patches are no good unless they are SLIME SKABS.
This is about my running and things incidental to it. Includes food and fashion. Of course.

Ay Up hang UP
I had a pleasureable ride home as I often do. Its dry, slightly cloudy and part of my route is waterside. Water is so calming.
On the street near home I found my flatmate by the roadside, seemingly surprised. Apparently I shone like a motorbike its impossible to see who or what is behind my lights. My good not so old Ay Ups.
I still wish they have an additional setting to flash maybe just 1 light instead of both at the same time. I just feel using the normal flashing lights at sunset is an overkill, I mean it can save me mounting another smaller flashing thing, right? I just dont have any more space on the handlebars. Its also blinding to pedestrians so I usually dont use them on shared paths unless its too dark.
And I also think the lights are so bright no one can see my right hand sticking out to turn right. I even had lumi bands on my wrist once and the car at the roundabout just kept going.
And I am annoyed how the coating got scratched off by the brick wall when my bike fell down.

The girlfriend guide to riding in the rain
Sydney's rain is a smattering compared to what we get in Singapore. While one can go "bah!" at it as a cyclist, it is not fun at all. Today half my ride home was under drizzle.
Wear the right gear
I wasn't too miserable nor cold. I like wearing a scarf under my helmet because it keeps the head warm. I've been using one of those stretchy hippy cotton headbands. They say to get the most expensive waterproof thing you can afford if you intend to commute. I had a shell which managed to keep me from getting drenched but only because it only drizzled. I also wear more than the average person because I hate being cold. I'd rather be hot than cold. A singlet, thermal and a shell. I was also wearing jeans which I think will be awful had it rained heavily. Jeans is just convenient and actually protects you when you fall.
Be seen
On a dark cloudy day riding at sunset I was wearing a grey outer shell. No good. I usually have a luminous water resistant jacket in my bag and gloves. But not today. I think I thought my lumi snap bands were good enough. No. Not when its overcast and late. Also I was too lazy to take my lights out till later which is a poor excuse for stupidity.
I thought the snap bands on my wrist will help drivers see my arm direction when I turn right on a roundabout if I have me Ayup lights on (very bright). They never seem to stop for me. Not even today with my snap bands. So if anything take your time at roundabouts; slow enough to make sure the car has stopped for you.
Go slow
I went slower. Not just because I was afraid of slipping in the wet. Falling off the bike the same afternoon at lunch and having a recent puncture didnt help. I took 15 min longer. I got off the bike whenever there is a sharp corner. I dont care if it looks silly in front of drivers at traffic lights. Being safe is better than being actually silly.
I also held on to my brakes a bit more downhill. And I avoided white lines like plague. There are numerous bicycle markings on the roads and I have always wondered if cyclists have ever slid off them.
When the ground is wet you also get dirty especially if you dont have mud guards. I also have to remember to stop smiling/grimacing with my mouth open because water splashes at the face from the tyres. So besides my dirty jeans and jacket I also have to wash my back pack.
All throughout my journey I felt uncomfortable because of the wet ground. It is not a good feeling to have and i remember distinctly telling myself next time its wet like this I will take the train home. And I will hold on the car still.

How to fix a puncture badly
The first puncture with every bike is always the hardest. Never mind that I have actually gone on a ladies course to fix your own.
Today I got a flat within 2 km of leaving the office at 430 pm when it was growing dark, it was drizzling and I was on a stretch with no lights.
1. Choose a bad spot
I decided to have a go. I stopped on a flat surface next to the path, unfortunately it was flat because it was a manhole. While I didnt drop anything into the grating I suggest not to do delicate operation near things like that because if a nut or other useful items fall in you're screwed.
I was 20 m from a lamp post. Did I make my way there the first time? No. I did that half way when it started getting quite dark and I didnt understand that my back wheels were not moving because I didnt fix it on tightly.
2. Try to take shortcuts
Once, on my previous bike I fixed a puncture without taking the entire tube out. Somehow I managed to patch the tube just by wedging it out from under the tyre. The tires were probably a little more seasoned from previous punctures fixing attempts or maybe it was just fatter.
I tried to do the same on this slightly skinnier wheels. No go. Didnt budge. But once I got into the mindset of removing the entire tyre out of the wheel, the tyres miraculously came out.
3. Use a bit of force
I struggled trying to get the tyres out at first. The snapping sounds of the lever was rather alarming, but thats how you do it. Levers always come in sets of 3s and I only had 2 because it came in a nifty set with patches. I cant really see how 3 would do any better but maybe it might've.
4. Do an exercise at home at least once with a new bike
So finally I took the tyre and tube out, fit the new tubes in and started pumping the tubes up with the hand pump.
Lulu's wheels uses presta valves as opposed to the other type I can remember the name. I have never changed presta valves and forgot to take the nut out before fitting the tube under the tyre and wondered why I couldnt pump up the tube.
By this time it was unseeingly dusk. I decided to call for help.
While waiting for help I managed to wedge out the valve to remove the nut.
Then I put the wheel back on. This is the back wheel and a but tricky because you have to fit the chain back in. When I went for the course they showed you how to do this without even touching the chain. I dont know how that was possible because I slid the wheel in and then found the chains were all wrong.
TAKE 2. And of course all that while I didnt loosen the brakes.
Back home I had a closer look at my workmanship. A piece of the tyre was still wedged outside the wheel frame but otherwise OK. It had stayed pumped up the duration of the car trip home at least.
So there. how to fix a puncture. poorly.

Mellow...
I feel I've mellowed out. I receive emails about the rides and events I've done last year but have not much enthusiasm about them this time. The only one that intereste me is the Spring Cycle. Because it involves a route I'd like to get to know to get to work.
Sydney to Wollongong? Its not exactly eco friendly to get someone to drive 90km to pick me up. City2Surf? No way. Yoga Aid? OK.
I have the intention to use the energy I spend on treadmill and loopy rides with a net distance of 0 to actually go somewhere. But its a lot harder than it seems. Weather is always a good excuse.
Its really the ride to work that gets me. Everyday I stare at maps and train schedules to make a little easier. and every time the same route stare back at me. The long gradual uphill, with small reprieves breaking worse and worse traffic and hills.
not to mention trying to get over sleepy head at 7 am or earlier and the cold.

Cak!
Obviously a yoga log isnt working. My focus since the last entry was more about going the distance and my strength on the hills. I had Lola my mountain bike. Lola was about developing my strength on the bike and served her purpose while she was with me.
Lulu, the flat bar, however is the eco chic. Lulu is not interested to go the distance nor speed. She just wants to get around without the carbon footprint.
Setting aside my own desire of breaking personal bests, I have come back to earth; treading lightly by cycling almost half my weekly commute to work and by giving myself more time for my yoga practice.

Yoga log
80 min teaching P 630pm to 850pm
We did the whole practice teaching sequence. P cant do Adho Mukha Virasana he says his knee hurts but he is more comfortable with balasana.
His adho mukha svanasana is also a lot better with his spine no longer humped.
While I still cant get him to straighten his back, I think he is trying, he doesnt feel his back working but the upper thigh. So I wonder if his bad posture is due to weakness in the core rather than being unable to straighten the thoracic muscles.
By the end P says that his back feels a lot of relief. I'm so happy to hear that.
Its great to know that people benefit from a session. I didnt actually know why I did the course other than because I have a lot of spare time it has startd to reveal itself to me now.
Its rewarding to know how muuch better they feel.
I do believe yoga has done so much for me. and I hope it will do so for others to and I guess thats what I should aim for.
The poise and confidence, being able to stand tall, relief from dull aches, the ability to breath in full because of the improvement in posture, and subsequently vitality gained from all the oxygen.
I'm happy to shre it with those I care about.

Bike ride at Iron Cove
I'd say its a lot more enjoyable than running here, or cyling around north ryde where its hilly. There is one long and steep hill here though. and I think its the last really short steep bit that's scary not because I ran out of puff but because its a long way down.

Yoga log
10.45 - 11.45 am
Yoga with J & J. Both have not had regular practice although they have done it before. They did not have any problems with their postures, except one did not get into Adho mukha svanasana properly until I told her to push her chest towards the thighs, which seems to be a clearer instruction than pusing the chest towards the floor.
I did not give left and right instructions properly, especially when I was facing them and did not mirror thme. So just a reminder to myself get used to it!!! I should also do some breathing exercises as they arrive to calm everyone down, instead of rushing through it, as a result even the warm up sequence broke a sweat!
Sequence was according to suggested practice except I did not do the Salamba sarvangasana because I did not think they were ready and anyway I could not do it.

Japa meditation 650 - 657
1-1 teaching session
Nadi Shodhana 840-845
Viloma 845-850
Mindful meditation 850-855
Bike ride 14 km 6pm
Bay run 7 km 46min 6pm
I did 1 on 1 pranayama this evening, I remember the name but i forgot to say the benefits. I dont think I gave the instruction clearly enough because my student asked. I think its hard to do it, 1 hour after the run because the heart was beating pretty fast and I was trying to concentrate on slowing it down.
I felt dizzy at the 3/4 point of the bike ride while I stopped for a break. So I slowed down until it passed. the run was good. there was a storm coming but it wasnt humid. At the 3km point I could keep my heart rate at 187.

Start of a yoga blog
This blog will probably shift its focus to yoga for now. Simply because I need ot discipline myself to log my yoga activities in my quest to be a teacher. Its assessed. So must do. I realised after last weekend's yoga instructors course that i have totally neglected this bit of my homework. So from now each day I will do at least 1 breathing exercise/meditation/asana practice.
So today:
Japa meditation 6.55- 7 pm
It was easy to focus simply because I am muttering mantras. I think however I forgot to sit up straight with a neutral spine.
Yoga with bernadette
815-915
The practice started with ujayi breathing in a cross legged position. There were many side bends today, and I cannot pinpoint a sequence. It was more like having many variations of each posture. Bernadette went around rubbing lavender oil above each students face as we did savasana. Her message today was honesty. To be honest with yourself that you are strong enough or not feeling well enough for each posture.
Food
Dinner was a fried rice variation. Instead of soya sauce I added butter (a bit too generous) and tumeric. Baby brocoli, baby carrot, eggs, onion, cashews.

Loop the Lake
So I drove 150km to Newcastle stayed the night and went to Spears Point for the 730 start. I met my colleagues took a picture and set off. They left me behind at the 10 km mark. I didnt mind, I mean I didnt expect to catch up with a road bike or a fit man.
So I went my own pace. Despite that I thought I tried reasonably hard. I pedalled on downhills mostly and I didnt stop to walk on the hills, as tempting as that can be.
Stopped at the morning tea point 35 km for a muffin. 50km where there was a bus stop on the highway and at the fruit stop 15 km from the finish.
At some point I started seeing the saddle with a bit of loathing.
I finished 85 km in 4 hr 45 min.
It was great and I look forward to the next one.
I love bike riding.

Fab week
This week has been fantastic. My total for tuesday alone was that of my last week's grand.
Monday - 17km bike
Tuesday - 14km bike, 8km run and yoga
Wednesday - 7km run
Thursday - ?
Friday - ?
Saturday - yoga + ?km run
Sunday - 38km ride
Looking quite promising
I thought it was good considering how grey the weather was mon and tues. Lane Cove national park was beautiful after rain. There was a waterfall that wasnt they before. It was amazing how the landscape changes.
I'm not quite caring about my timing now, especially since I lost my foot pod, but well, how about I just enjoy it all at my own comfortable pace.

another swim experiment
My last swim coach said to do three strokes before breathing just so you breath on both sides. Then a friend suggested i just swim every 2, because its more natural. SO I tried it and I could do 100m non stop alnost effortlessly. I still think i dont use my aems because they're not tired. I did 30 x 25m today, which is good considering I'd almost just get out after 10.
I did yoga later in the afternoon so today is considered a good day, only there were moments when the rain stopped and I wish I was out there running or cycling.

Drab week
This week was a bit drab for me. I am thankful for the rain but I wish I can get out more. I feel lazier. Its so dark in the mornings and cold and I just want to lie in instead of making my pancake brekkie and have that good start of the day.
Well admittedly its my own fault. or a case of bad planning.
I got a new mountain bike though :-) Only I have only ridden it once, and the rest of the time, it was out on my bike rack getting really wet with rain. Oh sitting pretty at the staircase in the carpark getting examined by curious colleagues.
Compared to last week, this week's really uncool total:
1. 17 km cycle
2. 7 km run
3. 1 yoga class.
